Leicester
City Council has pioneered an ambitious
Sustainable Energy Strategy. It aims to reduce
the
Cities overall energy use by half by 2025 - with
Renewable energy sources playing a major role.
Solar
energy is seen as a key option. The Council has
already installed solar cells on the council Offices.
During the summer these can heat 400 litres of
water from the mains temperature of 10-15°C
to 45°C, and they can save the council £450
a year due to reduced gas consumption. The Council
has also installed an advanced evacuated tube
heating sytem at a city swimming pool.
Leicester was designated Britain's first 'Environment
City'in 1990. It was one of only twelve cities
from
across the world invited to attend the first Earth
Summit In Rio.
