10. £5.2 million for Community Energy

The first capital bidding round for funding under the £50m Community Energy scheme in Spring 2002 released funds totalling £3.3 million. In the second round, the results of which were announced in Feb, 10 schemes to heat low income households, hospitals and other public buildings have received a £5.2 m. They should cut carbon emissions by 4,000 tonnes a year.

Grants include £880,000 for a community heating network in Chesterfield run on methane gas from a landfill site, and £93,222 for the Royal Southampton Hospital which is the first hospital scheme funded through the programme. Other successful bids came from Rotherham Borough Council, Midlothian Council, Woking Borough Council, Portsmouth City Council, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Edinburgh University, University of Dundee and London Borough of Croydon.

Lord Whitty, Minister for Sustainable Energy, said: "These schemes will heat 1,500 low-income households as well as universities, hospitals and other public buildings. They have clearly demonstrated cost-effective energy savings. I look forward to many more quality bids in future rounds of our programme."

Details of the schemes will be in Renew 144.
