7. SRC Support

As we mentioned in Renew 124, the Government has proposed a new scheme to support Energy Crops (SRC and Miscanthus). The programme, which is part of a wider package of measure for rural development, is planned to run within England, with a potential expenditure of £30m, up to 2006/07.  MAFF have put out a consultation paper which indicates that they are proposing to support the establishment of SRC plantations with £1000-£1600 per hectare grants, and provide £640 per hectare for elephant grass. They will also pay 50% of the cost of setting up local Producer Groups. More details in Renew 126.

The rest of the new rural development package is also still being developed, but the Agriculture Minister, Nick Brown, has indicated that the total allocation would eventually come to £1.6 billion for England, a 60% increase over 7 years, with MAFF making ‘a major switch of farm spending from production aids to support for the broader rural economy’, with new funding structures being introduced under the EU’s new Rural Development Regulation.
